Maritime History
Launched in 1736 at Lorient, Le Saint-Géran was a premier armed merchant vessel operated by the French East India Company to secure exotic goods from the Orient. In 1744, while approaching Isle de France (now Mauritius) under a violent storm, she tragically struck the coral reefs off Île d'Ambre and sank with nearly all her crew. Immortalized by writer Bernardin de Saint-Pierre in his famous world-classic novel Paul et Virginie, her legacy remains deeply woven into maritime romance and global history.
