Maritime History
Launched in 1669 at Brest, the Soleil Royal was named in honor of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King," and served as the proud, unmatched flagship of the Ponant fleet. Displacing over 1,600 tons and carrying up to 104 heavy guns across three fully fortified decks, she was widely considered the most beautifully decorated and artistically advanced warship of the Baroque era. Her legendary role leading the French fleet at the Battle of Beachy Head in 1690 cemented her status as an immortal icon of France's Golden Age of sail.
