Materials The skeleton of the boat is precision-cut from high-quality plywood. The hull is meticulously built by placing the first layer of planks one by one over the skeleton, then beautifully finished with premium teak wood and multiple coats of protective crisp white and dark marine paint to honor her historical livery. Detailed fittings include solid brass accents, miniature wooden lifeboats, and a zinc anchor. The pristine canvas sails and complex rigging are crafted from cotton and nylon, then finished with premium beeswax for maximum durability.

Maritime History

Launched in 1632 in Leith, Scotland, the Mercator served as a state-of-the-art training ship for the Belgian merchant fleet and a vital floating laboratory for scientific expeditions. She achieved worldwide fame by undertaking numerous oceanic research voyages, including a historic 1934 mission to Easter Island to bring back monumental statues for European museums. Having participated in prestigious international Tall Ships' Races and surviving World War II, she is beautifully preserved today as a floating museum in Ostend, Belgium.
