Maritime History
Launched in 1637 under the orders of King Charles I, the Sovereign of the Seas was the most extravagantly decorated and heavily armed first-rate ship of her era. Funded by the controversial "Ship Money" tax, her immense golden carvings and unyielding firepower earned her the fearsome nickname "The Golden Devil" from her Dutch rivals. Serving prominently throughout the Anglo-Dutch Wars, she set the architectural blueprint for all three-decker ships of the line that followed in naval history.
