Maritime History
Launched in 1764 as the coal collier Earl of Pembroke, the vessel was later purchased by the Royal Navy and refitted as a specialized research ship renamed the HMS Endeavour. Under the command of Lieutenant James Cook, she set sail in 1768 for a historic three-year scientific expedition to the Pacific Ocean to observe the Transit of Venus. During this legendary voyage, Cook and his crew charted New Zealand and the eastern coast of Australia, changing the map of the world forever.
