Maritime History

Launched in 1784 at Brest, Le Superbe was an elite 74-gun ship of the line built from the revolutionary plans of naval architect Jacques-Noël Sané. Her design was so structurally flawless and fast that the British Royal Navy frequently copied her proportions for their own frontline warships. Serving under Admiral Villaret de Joyeuse, her legendary career represents the absolute peak of French naval engineering during the golden age of sail.
