Maritime History

Initially launched as the merchant ship Bethia, she was purchased by the Royal Navy in 1787 and renamed the HMS Bounty for a specialized botanical mission to Tahiti. Under the strict command of Lieutenant William Bligh, the ship was heavily modified to transport breadfruit plants intended as a cheap food source for British colonies. Her voyage entered eternal global lore in April 1789, when Master's Mate Fletcher Christian led the historic mutiny, casting Bligh adrift and sailing the Bounty to Pitcairn Island.
