Maritime History
Launched in Marseille between 1692 and 1694, the Réale ("The Royal") was a spectacular "galère extraordinaire" and the flagship of the French galley fleet under King Louis XIV—the Sun King. Designed by naval architect Jean-Baptiste Chabert, she was reserved exclusively for the Admiral of the Galleys and distinguished by a grand, royal red ensign adorned with golden fleurs-de-lys. Unlike ordinary fleet galleys, the massive Réale de France required a colossal crew of over 360 rowers alongside officers and soldiers to propel her through the Mediterranean. Her stern was heavily decorated with masterfully sculpted artwork by the famed artist Pierre Puget. While the age of warfare galleys gradually came to a close in the early 18th century, the original ornate stern decorations are preserved today at the Musée National de la Marine in Paris, keeping the glorious heritage of the Real de France alive.
