SANTISSIMA
TRINIDAD - SPANISH - 1769
The Spanish ship Santísima Trinidad (officially named
Santísima Trinidad y Nuestra Señora del Buen
Fin) was a first-rate ship of the line of 120 guns, which
was increased in 1795-96 to 136 guns by closing in the spar
deck between the quarter deck and forecastle. Built at Havana,
Cuba, to a design by Irish naval architect Matthew Mullan
and launched in 1769 as a 120-gun three-decker.
Santísima Trinidad was the largest warship ever built.
This celebrated gigantic first-rate Spanish ship remained
the world's biggest warship during her long 36 years of service.
She took part in various wars namely American War of Independence,
the Battle of Cape St. Vincent in 1797 and the famous battle
of Trafalgar. She fought valiantly with all her might, suffered
great damage during these wars and finally was captured by
the Neptune.
The great Santísima Trinidad sank in a storm while
being towed by the Prince to Gibraltar to exhibit as a trophy.
