THE GALLEASS - ENGLISH - XVIth CENTURY

From the beginning of recorded history and up to the very end of the XVIIth Century, galleys formed the main constituents of the Mediterranean maritime powers.
The venetions whose trading interests were vast carried the galley to its final sophistication the galleass, a sort of oared frigate which was a high freeboard vessel with a gundeck above the oarsmen and three masts bearing fore and aft lateen sails. Such a vessel was copied by other Mediterranean nations and even the English had form of galleass in their fleet of 1545.
