LA
CREOLE - FRENCH - 1798
Nothing much is known about the Creole and the part it played
in the defence of Mauritius against the English. It is believed
to have finished as a privateer. Extensive repairs had to
be done after four or five years in the Indian Ocean.
The Governor Mahé de La Bourdonnais started a ship
building yard first to repair the ship and from 1798 onwards
to build merchantships which could be used as warship. The
first realization was a small brick, to be followed by La
Creole and Le Necessaire of 150 tons, each and then L’Utile
of 250 and eventually L’Insulaire of 350 tons, armed
with 24 guns and having a crew of 350 men under the command
of M. de la Baume.
